Can e-commerce businesses make money primarily through banner advertisements?

I was wondering if banner advertisements from other companies on an e-commerce business's website would be sufficient for revenue. A better question may be, how much revenue would a nationally recognized site (i.e. http://www.mugglenet.com), expect to make annually solely from hosting advertisements? THANKS!
