Can you get away with running 87 octane(reg) when it says 91 octane or higher?

if its ok to use it, i ts only for highway trips, not around town stop and go. i have used it once on a highway trip because of high gas prices, and car ran fine,i think 1 or 2 mpg less at most. Just want to know if it will damage engine?
