My 18th Great Grandfather was James Butler the 1st Earl of Ormond wouldn't that make me an Earl?

You may be the only male left in the line but if you are not directly descended from the eldest son in each generation then ther is no way for you to make the claim. When the eldest male line died out the title died with him.
