Postcards and other selling techniques?

Alright so I hear different stories saying stock photography is the best and then others say its the worst and in order to make anything you need thousands of photos. Well I was wondering then what other ways? Let me give you a rundown on what I photography. I photograph scenery, weather (especially lightning), wildlife, really anything scenic that would look nice on a photo or even a postcard. Now what i don't know is how do I get my photos out to companies interested in buying them for publishing as a postcard or poster or whatever or how will I do it on my own?
