What legal recourse do I have if my husband who flies a private plane for a hobby dies? Insurance? Lawsuits?

My husband rents planes from a local aero club that has him and any pengers sign a waiver that includes a promise not to sue them if anything goes wrong. If there was gross negligence on the aero club's part, can I still sue? Also, one of the other wives told me that if he dies while flying, life insurance will not pay. Is this true? Is there a way to be more covered should something go wrong? Thanks in advance.
